Mechanical Engineer

Job Location: Norfolk, VA

Summary: Coordinates interdisciplinary engineering functions, performs technical liaison with Delphinus staff, customers, and technical authorities as tasked, and supports repair and installation teams as needed to resolve technical issues. Oversees efficient and timely accomplishment of engineering tasks and functions. Oversees implementation of the Quality Management System as it relates to repairs and installations on board US Navy Submarines, Deep Submergence Systems, and Surface Ships. Must have experience in Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) and Deep Submergence Systems-Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC) requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Implements Quality Management System throughout the repair and installation processes.
  2. Ensures compliance with contractual and technical requirements for the repair and installation teams.
  3. Maintains resources and tools to support efficient accomplishment of tasks.
  4. Trains technical writers and task leaders in technical requirements.
  5. Performs technical research and coordination as needed with technical authorities.
  6. Supports technical issues for material procurement.
  7. Develops or supports development of specialized procedures and documentation in support of the development of technical work instructions for repairs and installations of shipboard equipment.
  8. Coordinates technical issues.
  9. Provide subject matter expertise to equipment technical assistance teams in the assessment, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of shipboard equipment.
  10. Maintain and update associated process instructions in compliance with Submarine Safety, Deep Submergence Systems, ISO quality standards, and NAVSEA Standard Items.


  • A minimum of ten years engineering experience related to navy ship maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary systems is required; with five years’ experience in Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) and Deep Submergence Systems-Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC) requirements.
  • An Engineering Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • One must have good written communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills. Ability to follow directions is a must. Applicants must be able to work well alone and as part of a team. A Security Clearance or the ability to obtain one will be required. U.S. Citizenship required.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:

  1. Thorough knowledge of Navy and marine design requirements, shipboard systems, system interfaces, and documentation associated with Submarines, Deep Submergence Systems, and surface ships.
  2. Technical knowledge of all phases of shipboard installation for modifications and alterations, with a special emphasis on the interrelationships between trades and technical requirements. Conversant with SUBSAFE requirements, DSS-SOC requirements, and NAVSEA Standard Items.
  3. Familiar with review of contract and technical requirements, and communications with customers, technical points of contact, Technical Authorities, and installers.

  • Occasional travel and overtime may be required.
  • Must have or be able to possess a DOD Security Clearance.
